According to Google, it seems that there are about 700,000 applications available for downloading on devices running Android. As usual, this situation can be translated as an eternal challenge against Apple’s lead in the race for software tools.

Analyzing the number of applications, one conclusion can be drawn: Google has matched Apple in the number of games, productivity tools and other programs that are usable on tablets and smartphones. Ironically or not, Apple said last week that its App Store has more than 700,000 apps. Really? Or is it 700,000 apps in fact? But Apple has to offer something more than Google, no matter whether it's about one or two apps extra.

By luring software developers to its Android platform, Google is attempting to eliminate a key selling point Apple has used for the iPhone and iPad. Applications have become a battleground as the two companies try to boost the $219.1 billion smartphone market. The rivalry extends beyond smartphones. For instance, Google today unveiled a tablet with a 10-inch screen, estimated at $399. Indeed, this scenario reminds of iPad Mini.

In the race for attracting more software developers, Apple has argued that its iOS operating system leads to more sales. Much more, Apple said last week that it has paid $6.5 billion to developers since the App Store was introduced in 2008. We are expecting Google to reveal its payments for developers as soon as possible. For the moment, Samsung tried to defend somehow its own friend, by saying that it sold 3 million Galaxy Note II smartphones globally, obviously we talk about gadgets based on Android. Samsung Galaxy Note II is the 5.5-inch controversial tablet hybrid device that launched in the US last week, promising to reach a larger audience than it did in Europe.
